In 2002 I set up Solent Speech and Language, a private practice providing high quality assessment and therapy for children and communication related training for parents and professionals. I studied for a Post-Graduate Certificate in Evidence Based Practice at the University of Portsmouth.

I have experience working with a wide variety of communication disorders from speech delays and disorders, articulation difficulties and dyspraxia, language delays and disorders, pragmatic disorder, as well as communication difficulties associated with cerebral palsy, autistic spectrum disorders, developmental delay and learning difficulties.

I have attended specialised training on:

  • Developmental speech disorders
  • Core vocabulary therapy
  • Non-directive therapy (play and communication therapy)
  • Derbyshire Language Scheme
  • Makaton
  • Cued Articulation
  • Oral motor exercises for speech clarity (Talk Tools)
  • Intensive Interaction
  • Dynamic assessment

I specialise in early language difficulties, speech delays and disorders, oral motor difficulties including dyspraxia, social interaction difficulties and pre-verbal communication.

After many years practising as a speech and language therapist I am still passionate about helping children reach their potential in communication skills. I use a blend of experience, knowledge and problem solving to plan and implement therapy tailored to the individual child.

Solent Speech

Laura Gardner

I trained as a speech and language therapist at City University as a post-graduate, qualifying in 2011. Following qualification I worked in independent practice in London for one year before joining Solent Speech and Language in January 2013.

I am committed to facilitating and developing communication for children and young people and enjoy working with children with a variety of speech, language and communication needs. My particular areas of interests are social communication difficulties, autistic spectrum disorder, specific language impairment, language delay and speech disorders. I see speech and language therapy as part of a wider multidisciplinary intervention, where effective joint working enables positive change for the individual.

Before qualifying as a speech and language therapist, I worked in the field of arts and culture for ten years, facilitating the personal development of individuals working in the creative sector through the management of grants and awards. Prior to this I studied at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1999 with MA (Hons) History.

I have undertaken training in Makaton, Non-Directive Therapy, Cued Articulation and Word Aware.
